    Thanks, Candi

Here we are in a new year and a new decade, January 2010. It’s been a bitterly cold winter season already and we’re not done yet!

I live in southwest Florida in what is considered the sub-tropics and we’ve had the coldest weather in twenty years. Yuk.

So what can we do? I know…how about a living room redesign! Why not? Many readers are stuck indoors anyway, so may as well do something fun and productive, right?

Redesigning your living room, or living area, can spark a new life into that space, even on a limited budget.

It requires a little bit of thought and planning, and definitely some elbow grease, but the results can be well worth the time and effort.

And, you don’t have to go outside!

Here are the steps involved in living room redesign. Read all the way through before you start.

First, remove all of the clutter…stuff…whatever you want to call it. Things that don’t need to be in the living room. If you don’t use it, get rid of it.

Next, take all the accessories out of the room. This includes everything on the walls, collections on display, lamps, other miscellaneous items.

Put all of these things in another room, out of sight for now. You should have just the large pieces left in the space.

While the room is fairly empty, give it a thorough cleaning! Has your window treatment been hanging in the same place for a long, long time? If applicable, take it down and get it cleaned, or wash it.

The next step in your living room redesign is to step back and determine what the focal point is in this room.

Here are a few thoughts. Is there a lovely fireplace, a beautiful view, a soaring wall with an entertainment unit? The focal point is the area that your eye is drawn to when you enter the space.

Once the focal point has been determined, arrange your largest pieces of furniture so that anyone seated can see the focal point.

For example, if there is a lovely fireplace and a beautiful view out the windows, angle the sofa and chairs so that occupants can enjoy both.

Pull the furniture away from the walls and create interesting angles, possibly a couple of conversation areas. Try a furniture arrangement that you’ve never done before.

Find a piece of furniture, large or small, from another room in your home and bring it into the living room redesign. It can be great fun to enjoy a familiar piece of furniture in a brand new way.

Once you have created a furniture arrangement that is different, interesting and functional, it’s time to bring in the smaller items and accessories.

Try to use different lamps, pictures and accessories than were in the room prior to the redesign project. I know it’s not always possible, but think of each item as a possibility, not so much as ‘I’ve always had this lamp in the bedroom, so it’s a bedroom lamp.’

You can create a very different look and feel by using familiar pieces in different rooms, hanging in new locations, etc.

Here are some other living room redesign ideas that require a little more work, or perhaps some expenditure:

    1) Paint the room a new color, or perhaps an accent wall
    2) Change out the window treatments 3) Purchase an area rug to complement your creative furniture arranging 4) Purchase a new accessory or accent piece for the space

If you want a lot more detail regarding living room (or any room of your home) arrangement/design/redesign, you’ll find it in my guide, ‘Ten Simple Steps to Design Success’.

I’m not trying to do a sales job here, so please know that. This guide takes what I’ve just said in a few paragraphs and gives details, illustrations, pictures and checklists for you.

The cost is very reasonable, so consider giving it a try. Your satisfaction is guaranteed.

Thanks again, and please visit Great Home Decorating soon!

Have fun with your living room redesign, stay warm and take care!

With the passing of the Labor Day holiday we can officially say that summer is in the past, and we look forward to cooler days, football games and cider mills. Well, there aren’t really any cider mills near me in southwest Florida, but you get the idea!

It might be time for some simple and budget friendly seasonal updates in your home as well. Looking for a few ideas? Here are several that will look great with just about any style of home decor.

Fall colors are earthy, natural shades of brown, green and beige. You might choose a soft aqua as an accent color, or, go down a different road and bring in a deep pumpkin for color. You choose the accent.

Use this palette on walls, floors, window treatments, in room accents and artwork.

Try this idea for a real room refresher: Remove everything except the largest pieces, then bring in accents of furniture and accessories made from natural elements such as wood, wicker and cotton, using the color palette established above. Accents of iron work well, too.

Keep everything very simple with a ‘less is more’ philosophy. Look for patterns with subtle, natural prints.

You’ll create not only a refreshingly simple, natural space, but also a great backdrop for the holiday decorating that will follow in the months to come.

Coffee Time Thoughts…New Lampshades for an exciting, fresh look!

Freshen up the look of a room with new lampshades. Change the style and/or shape. Just make sure that the measurements of the new shade match the shade you are replacing. Consider a different shade color as well if it suits your decor style. And, once you make the switch, you might even put the ‘new’ lamp in a totally different room or space.

Eco friendly home decorating is just a part of an environmentally friendly lifestyle that many folks are turning to in an effort to create a healthier home that is more in tune with natural products. While there are different levels of eco friendly living, some choices are quite simple and with just a little thought and effort, can be used by many of us.

I have always been an advocate of using what you have to decorate, and searching for great pieces and accents that you can recycle for your home. Why spend the money and use the resources when there might be the perfect piece just waiting for you in an antique store, consignment shop or flea market?

If purchasing new furniture, search for organic fabrics that are grown without pesticides and processed without chemicals. Look for pieces that are made of reclaimed wood and filled with organic upholstery fill.

Need to paint? Look for companies that sell non-volatile organic compounds (VOC) or low-VOCs. They are better for the environment. One option is Benjamin Moore, always my top choice in quality paint products. Look for their Natura paint. It is virtually odorless, zero VOC emissions and best yet is available in any color selection.

Eco friendly living and lifestyle choices are becoming a way of life for many. If you have been making the switch to organic foods, why not go a step or two further and use eco-friendly cookware? Just as eating food that is grown and processed without chemicals and pesticides so is choosing safe cooking dishes.

Want to entertain naturally? Choose organic cotton napkins and table cloths as well as napkin rings, soy candles and other natural dining options that keep chemicals away from food.

Why not decorate your entire home naturally with picture frames, candle holders and other green home decor items made from natural materials such as wood, stone, slate and recycled glass.

Add hand-woven silk pillows to your sofa or cozy up in an organic throw blanket made from 100% organic cotton. Decorate your table with an all-natural herb garden, natural gourd or beautiful natural diffuser and enjoy the feeling you get from decorating your home in a way that doesn’t compromise our planet or your well-being.

I have found EdenHome.com to be a great source of eco friendly products for your home and family, including children’s clothing. If you have decided to make a conscious switch to organic and eco friendly living, even if you select one piece of clothing or one item for the home at a time, EdenHome.com provides choices that will fit your lifestyle!

We’re about midway through the summer months, and I don’t know about you, but for me the days and weeks are flying by!

Even so, it might be a good time to take a peek at the inside of your home, room by room, and see if there are some home organization projects you could tackle.

I know…the weather is great, you want to spend time outdoors, the kids are out of school, etc. etc.

Here’s the thing – you don’t have to tackle the entire house, just one area at a time, like a closet, for example. If you break up a large project into small pieces, it’s more attainable and doesn’t seem overwhelming. An hour spent here and there to work on it will add up.

For me, my current cleanup and clean out project is taking place because we will be moving in a few months and I refuse to take anything with me that has not been used in the past year or so, and isn’t likely to have a function in our lifestyle anytime soon.

Here are some great tips for you to follow if you want to have an organized home.

Take this project a little bit at a time, and before long your home will look great (even in the closets, cabinets and under the beds!)

Coffee Time Thoughts…Frame your children’s artwork for a colorful wall display

If you’re like many parents, you collect your kid’s (or grandkid’s) artwork and store it away for mementos of their childhood. Why not take your favorite pieces, frame them, and place the collection in a hallway, guest room or other area of your home. They could even brighten up the laundry room!

Use your imagination with the frame shapes and sizes, and have fun!

If you want to be ‘in the know’ when it comes to color trends in home decorating and design, read on to find out what two experts in the field have to say.

First, from the folks at Benjamin Moore paint, comes COLOR PULSE 2011. They’ve created four themes, including The Farm, Order, Escape and Tribe.

The Farm encompasses earthy, natural colors and textures and simple fabrics with tie-dyes and tea stains.

Order returns to primary colors coupled with blacks, grays and whites, utilizing clean lines and geometric shapes.

Escape is designed for the softer, feminine colors. Expect to see rosy pinks with carbon, lavender with brown, and pale green with camel.

Tribe brings in the bold tones of fiery orange, red berry and cinnamon, and pairs them with bronze, charcoal and brown.

Our next color visionary is the Paint Quality Institute, which takes a philosophical approach to color trends in 2011.

Budget conscious consumers will look for simple and relatively inexpensive ways to update their home and create a sense of newness without spending a lot of money in the process. You can change the appearance, the perception of size and even the perception of temperature, through the simple use of paint color.

Now that the holiday season is over, it’s time to put away the seasonal decor and restore our homes to their pre-holiday state.

Instead of recreating the same look in your room or space, breath some new life into it with simple furniture re-arranging. Or, if you need to keep things on a simpler plane, place your accessories differently…switch out artwork and wall decor…go through your cabinets and find interesting pieces that have been on the shelf (literally) for awhile.

You might be surprised at how simple changes alter the look and feel of a room. Need more detail? Read about furniture placement and accessorizing here.

Bedroom makeovers don’t have to be expensive projects, nor do they need to be long, drawn out affairs. With some thoughtful planning and preliminary preparations you can redesign and makeover a bedroom in a weekend.

There are two very important steps you need to take before bedroom makeovers begin…Planning and Preparation

    1. Planning takes into consideration the color scheme and shopping list.

Most bedroom makeovers include painting the walls, and I highly recommend this step! Select a color palette based on your 1) overall color palette in the home, 2) use of this particular bedroom, 3) personality & lifestyle.

Bright and bold…serene and calm…cottage charm…cool and contemporary…warm and cozy…these are just a few suggestions for the overall theme and color choices.

Now for the shopping list. Decide what is going to be replaced for this bedroom redesign.

Here are some suggestions that are simple and budget friendly: 1. New bedding, scatter rugs, lamp(s), artwork, mirror, accent pillows, lampshade(s), window treatments – any combination of these, depending on your budget and desire to create a different look in the room 2. Replace the headboard 3. Purchase new hardware for the case goods in the room. 4. Paint the furniture – if your decorating style fits the bill, a coat of paint and even some intentional distressing can give charm and personality to a tired chest of drawers or dresser.

    2. Preparation for bedroom makeovers sets the project up for success! This is not the most fun or enjoyable part of the makeover , but ultimately will result in a more successful project. Clean out the clutter!

Here are a few more bedroom makeover ideas: 1. Rearrange the furniture. 2. Mix and match the bedding 3. Utilize dimmer switches and/or 3-way light bulbs 4. Consider updating the window treatments.

Bedroom makeovers can happen in a weekend! You have planned, cleaned and shopped…now the time has come to put it all together. First, take care of the painting, making sure to repair old drywall holes… Then, arrange the largest pieces of furniture… When you are satisfied with the arrangement, bring in the bedding and accessories… Hang the artwork…

Enjoy your freshly redesigned space with weekend time to spare!

One of the most encountered problems is of the cigarette smoke which is offensive for many people and also downright harmful. One such problem is being faced by one lady. She has taken a lot of precautions to keep her apartment insulated from cigarette smoke but still is having problem  of smoke leaking from the adjoining apartments through the walls. Though problem is genuine, there is really not solutions for such cases. Her only way is to move out from this building and get accommodation in some non-smoking building.

Cigarette smoke from neighboring apartments leaking through walls?

I’ve lived in this apartment for two and a half months and I cannot stand it. My eyes hurt, my throat is swollen and I get headaches. The previous tenants were smokers but when I moved in I washed everything down twice; walls, floors (laminate), even the inside of the baseboard heaters. I painted the ceilings as well. I have an air purifier running in my bedroom and it really helps. In the bathroom there are two large holes in the wall – one under the sink for access to pipes and one above that previously housed an aging medicine cabinet that didn’t quite fit. I covered both with plastic, along with the bathroom fan vent and kitchen fan vent. I’ve insulated all wall outlets and telephone things, sealed all holes from nails and such with silicone. The hallway does not often smell (it’s illegal to smoke in common areas but sometimes people leave their doors open and the smell escapes) but I used expanding weather stripping all around the door. The walls joining apartments are solid but the walls inside apartments are hollow – these are the walls that stink. Some days it’s almost tolerable, some days it smells as though someone is smoking right beside you. The ceilings/floors are all concrete slabs. Its all baseboard heating, no AC. Pretty basic, simple place. The building was built mid seventies. The building is 6 stories. I don’t know what else to do. I know I should just move, so I’d don’t need the reminder. I won’t be asking management or my landlord for assistance, they don’t care and I don’t care to fight it. Anything else I’m missing? It’s seems to be coming through the hollow walls, any reasonable fix(es)?

When you’re reading through the homes for sales, the descriptions commonly refer to various architectural or structural descriptions that are not always explained. Here is a list of some of the more common terms to help you get a clearer picture of what you’re buying.Foyer: A foyer in a commercial building such as a theater is a large gathering space next to the main auditorium or seating area.

This would be the area commonly occupied during intermission for instance. In a house, a foyer is generally the front entry area where guests arrive. Transom: Either one long rectangular window over a door or window, or a series of small windows. Some are opening, but most are fixed and simply allow for extra light. Dormer: An upstairs window with wooden peak that juts out from the roof line, and allows for windows in upstairs rooms. Usually they appear in multiples of two or three, and are common in cape cod style homes.Sidelights: These are narrow windows bordering the outer edges of entrance doors. Some run the full length of the door, others run only part way and are filled in at the bottom. Bay: A bay window projects out from an exterior wall creating added space in a room and adding to the appeal of the outside of the house. Often a seat or ledge is created inside to provide a sunny window seat.Wainscoting: This is a type of wood paneling found on the lower part of the wall, running up about three to four feet. It is often painted or stained in a contrasting color and adds interest to a room.Chair Rail: This wooden feature usually appears at the top of wainscoting, or can be a decorative trim on its own bordering a room. Commonly found in the dining room, a chair rail protects the wall from chairs being pushed away from the table. It also adds an accent to a plain wall or creates a divider between two decorating schemes such as paint and wallpaper.French Doors: These are two doors hinged on the outside edge, allowing them to swing open in the center. Often made of paned glass, they can be used to separate two rooms such as a living and dining room, or often as exterior doors leading to a deck or patio.Coffer: This is a ceiling with small indented wooden panels. In older homes these are constructed solely of wood, but newer models reconstruct the same look by creating a wooden drop ceiling or by bordering a textured drywall ceiling with decorative trim or molding. Gables: These are the triangular end walls formed by a sloping roof. They can be at the front, side or back of a home, over dormers and bay windows. Claw footed tub: These are the old style tubs supported by legs with claw shaped feet, similar to those found in furniture. They stand alone, unlike most tubs which are built into the walls. Today, most tubs are modern reproductions of the older versions. Loft: This is an area usually on the second floor, at the top of the stairs overlooking the lower floor. It is generally bordered by a railing for safety, and creates an open, airy look in a home, allowing those on upper floors to view the activities below.
